Bathgate Band is celebrating a landmark achievement after securing its first-ever invitation to the British Open Spring Festival, following victory at the Fife Charities Band Association Contest in Kirkcaldy.
Under the baton of Musical Director Craig Anderson, the band delivered an atmospheric performance of Peter Graham’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth to win the test piece section and claim the overall title. The band also secured second place in the march competition with The Australasian and fourth place in the hymn tune section with Lord of All Hopefulness.

Further honours included the awards for Best Non-FCBA Band and Best First Section Band, while individual players were recognised with accolades for Best Horn, Best Basses Section and Best Percussion Section.
The contest also saw Craig Anderson recognised with the Winning Conductor award.

A Historic Milestone
While the contest victory itself was a significant achievement, the result carries even greater importance for the band’s future.
By winning the event, Bathgate Band has earned an invitation to compete in the Senior Trophy Section of the British Open Spring Festival in Birmingham in May 2027.
Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the brass band calendar, the Spring Festival brings together many of the finest bands from across Great Britain and forms part of the pathway to performing at the world-famous Symphony Hall.
For Bathgate Band, qualification represents a genuine milestone in the organisation’s long history.
This will be the band’s first-ever appearance at the British Open Spring Festival and marks the highest level of competitive brass banding the organisation has reached to date.
Spring Festival invitations are earned, not given. Bathgate’s success against strong opposition, including Championship Section competitors, reflects the significant musical progress made by the band in recent years under the leadership of Craig Anderson and the dedication of the players both in rehearsal and on the contest stage.
Looking Ahead to Birmingham
The qualification now gives the band the opportunity to test itself against some of the country’s leading ensembles when it travels to Birmingham next May.
While the invitation represents a major achievement in its own right, the band sees it as another step in its continued development and a chance to proudly represent Bathgate on a national stage.
Speaking after the contest, the band president, Gerry Duggan, said:
“We were absolutely delighted to come away with first place overall and even more thrilled to see our hard-working Musical Director, Craig Anderson, receive the Winning Conductor award.
Qualifying for the 2027 Senior Trophy at the British Open Spring Festival is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with the band and one of the most significant moments in our history.
A huge well done to all our players for the dedication and commitment they showed in preparing for the contest, and thank you to our supporters, volunteers, families and sponsors who continue to support the band’s ambitions.
We would also like to thank the Fife Charities Band Association for running another excellent contest.”
As preparations begin for Birmingham in 2027, the band looks forward to embracing the challenge ahead and adding another chapter to its proud musical history.
